The lights were buzzing overhead when Cassandra woke up. She groaned, squinting. She closed her eyes quickly and heard a chair scrape across the floor nearby. “Your eyes sensitive? Yeah, I noticed that earlier when I woke up. He should really fix that light.“ Doc mumbled.
“Jenn Dougan. Is that a given name or alias?” The redhead asked. Jenn looked over at her, a bit grateful her head wasn’t tied down. She blushed, though glancing down to see herself completely naked. The woman let her head fall back, breathing heavily. She was aware of Doc standing next to her side. The other leaned in, Doc had Jenn’s wallet in her hand.
“What is it like? That rush of fear, I’ll admit, I find it beautiful. I often wonder if I’ll feel that in my last moment. Most iv seemed to have experienced are little licks of it. Having an arm torn off and being shot with a shotgun does that. But never a rush like now with you. Tell me what it’s like? Please describe it to me?”
Jenn was breathing heavily, she counts backwards, trying hard to focus on her breathing. “My chest is tight. I-I can’t catch my breath. M-my st-st-belly is tight and I feel sick.” She said softly.
Doc slowly nodded, she tilted her head and backed up, sitting on the little steel stool near the table. She folded her hands together and waited.
“What are you going to do?”
“My process takes a while, but you won’t be awake for it, however, you will die “
The girls’ breathing started to hitch as tears streamed down her face.
Doc reached out, petting Jenn’s head and it running fingers through her hair.
“Death isn’t always finite dear, often it only means change,” she said to the girl and then kissed the top of her head.
She then got up and walked over to an I.V stand and attached it to a tap already in Jenn’s arm. She Opens the I.V. Jenn was crying by then, the crying turned into an outright wail as the other pushed an aspirator and set of suction pumps into view alongside the table.
Doc worked quietly, even turning a radio on nearby. Finally, Jenn started to quiet down, sniffling softly. “Jars? A-are you gonna put me in jars?” She asked and Doc paused where she had been pouring a disinfectant on her tools.
“Hmm? You saw that night? The closet was open I know. So what did you see? Come now, you must have some idea of my genuine work.”
She walked over to the I.V and fully opened the line.” Soon...so speak while you can,” Doc said, pushing a table with wheels over to Jenn.
“ A-a man he was in a jar, his head... his hands everything everywhere. I saw it before they came in and I..” She says softly, shivering and gulping as Doc uncovered a large pot with a pink goo dried to the outside in places.
“Ahh but what was so different about the head that you noticed...surely you saw? “
Jenn blinked rapidly, her eyelids starting to droop.
“He... was talking. I saw his lips move, but he had to be fake,” she muttered dreamily.
“It was real, my dear, soon you will understand the gift I give to you today. Now sleep...“
The woman’s last image of Doc is the woman dripping something from her necklace into the vat. Followed by a pink glow that shined inside and bounced off the ceiling above them.
Doc set to work first removing the fluids from the body. Afterwards, she checked over the contents before finally replacing everything damaged and then filling the remains with the glowing pink material to replace the blood. It took time, and she had to take a couple breaks, one of which was to call Pipin and reassure her Doc was still alive before continuing her work.
Looking Jenn over, she wheeled over a battery wired up to a strange and lovely tesla coil. “How lucky am I that my equipment, though dated, is still functioning?”
She hooked it up carefully, thrust the end of a thin and sharp probe through the flesh into the heart.
She took a long breath and then stepped back, grabbing a handle on the machine and beginning to turn it. With each crank the machine made a soft crackling noise as it charged. It had always been a preference for Doc to make sure her more power producing tech to be off the main grid. Sadly a lightning storm wasn’t available when you needed one.
With each turn the metal coil on the machine, encased with glass, began to glow and produce electrical bolts that ran up its shaft. “just a bit more...”
Finally, the meter on the machine blinked from red to green, and she pressed a button. The body on the table jerked as electricity flowed through it. She did it once, twice, three times as pink charged electricity flowed across the body before all went quiet.
With a gasp Jenn’s head is thrown back and she takes her first real breaths.
She struggled against the straps holding her down for the first few breaths before settling down again with a whimper.
Her breathing hitched, and she looked around, clearly confused. “Do you know who I am?” Doc asked softly, leaning over the other but the confusion and fear in the eyes tells her all she needs to know. The former killer speaks her first words as a new life. “... Momma?”
The mad scientist sighs a twinge of regret filling her heart. “Of coarse its been more constant recently this formula variation wasn’t strong enough either...” Reluctantly she started releasing the straps on the side of the table. “Another failure...” she muttered, and as the last strap came free, the woman sat up and whimpered. She looked around and then hugged herself.
Hesitating only a moment, Doc reached out and grabbed her hand. “Hey...focus on me. It’s alright, darling, nothing here will hurt you.” She said firmly and was rewarded with an unexpected hug from the creature. She was rather lucky it was gentle someone in Jenn’s position now could easily snap her spine with the right motivation.”um...there there” She, said patting the others back a bit awkwardly. The naked woman clung to her. The stitching down her stomach scraping against Doc’s shirt. “Be careful now, I don’t want you to undo your stitches. That will take a few days to heal up properly, dear...”
Doc grunted gently, pulling away from the girl who whimpered when she did so, but thankfully let go. “Its alright I have another daughter who will love a sister to care for, I’m sure.” She said not meeting the creature’s gaze as she moved away long enough to come back with a blanket, draping it over her creation’s shoulders.
“I suppose sense you or....let’s call you Cassandra for now.”She offered gently, looking down as the creature smiled at her and repeated her words though clumsily.
“Yes. That’s right, Cassandra, very good, darling.”
Doc was about to say something more when a loud crash from upstairs caused her to jump. She quickly ran to the door and peered out, but could see nothing in the basement area but the scent of smoke wafted into the room. “Shit, someone’s here.” Doc ran to the stairs, but as she reached the top and touched the door, she had to yank her hand back quickly. “Fire” She whispered and bolted back down.
“Cassandra, we have to go now,” she said, trying to keep her voice level as she goes back into the other room. Doc grabbed a duffel bag of her old supplies. Reaching out, she took Cassandra’s hand.
“w-why?” the woman asked, clearly confused as Doc managed to get her on her feet and tug her towards the darkness of the basement.
“Someone set the upstairs on fire. Fire bad darling fire will destroy you when bullets wont. “She said, trying her best to explain without scaring the girl, though Cassandras sudden whimper and tears proved her wrong in her haste.
“Fire...hurt?” The taller woman asked with a whimper. Cassandra came to a frightened standstill, which made it almost impossible for Doc to pull her along due to her strength.
“Yes but....” Doc looked down and then slowly hugs the scared woman, closing her eyes.” I will protect you that’s what I do I protect monsters like, us Cassandra.” She said firmly, looking up at the other who sniffled but then slowly nodded and started walking.
Doc guided her carefully, eventually finding a very familiar window she had escaped out of all those years ago while being hunted. Doc crawled out first, but Cassandra stood in the basement looking uncertain.”Mommy? Will you...b-burn too?” She asked, looking back over her shoulder, before Doc managed to get her attention again.
“It’s ok please come on, sweetie. It’s safe ill help you. Don’t worry about me.” Doc called, reaching back into the window. It took a couple more coaxing words before finally Cassandra grabbed her hands and Doc manages with a lot of effort to get her out of the window.
Doc was gasping for air when they finally cleared the house’s backyard. Looking back, she paused, staring at the flames as they engulfed the old house and shuddered when the symbol of the Order appeared.
“Of course, your why this all happened. Whoever you are, I’m ready for you. I dare you to come find me.” She snarled before taking Cassandra’s hand and leading her away from the building into the dark of night.
